What are Medicare Skilled Rehabilitation Services or Swing Beds?

The two terms are used interchangeably and are defined in the same manner. Beginning November 1, 2004, Pointe Coupee General Hospital became a swing bed/Medicare skilled services nursing provider. A Medicare skilled or swing bed designated hospital is able to provide care to individuals that are in need of skilled nursing or skilled rehabilitation services.

What constitutes a need for skilled nursing care or skilled rehabilitation services?

Often times an individual no longer qualifies for acute inpatient hospitalization but is still in need of skilled nursing or rehabilitative care within the confines of a health care facility. A few examples of individuals requiring skilled nursing would be those patients with wounds, new feeding tubes, or in need of intravenous medication. Patients requiring skilled rehabilitative services may need the services of physical, speech, and/or occupational therapy. The physician will order the necessary services according to the patient's needs.

What other services are offered to the skilled resident at Pointe Coupee General Hospital?

PCGH offers a comprehensive activity program to assist the individual in achieving their rehabilitative goals. A social worker is also available to address the individual's social, emotional, and psychological needs. Other services offered include the assessment of the individual's nutritional needs by a registered dietician and dietary manager. Respiratory therapy, laboratory, xray, and dental services are also available.

Is it a requirement that the individual enter into skilled services in the same health care setting in which they are an inpatient?

No, a patient may be admitted to a hospital for an acute illness. When the individual qualifies for skilled services, it is that individual's right to transfer to their facility of choice which offers skilled services.

What would be the benefits of receiving skilled care at Pointe Coupee General Hospital?

The nurse-patient ratio at PCGH is low thus insuring individualized comprehensive nursing care for the patient. The advantage of being close to home with the accessibility of family and friends close by is also a positive benefit.
